Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Water Lab

There are a couple ways students can secure research opportunities, including connecting with an office/department, connecting with a lab on campus, and connecting with a faculty member conducting research.

Here are a few places you can reach out to about undergraduate research:

  • The VT Office of Undergraduate Research (general resource for helping students locate research opportunities)

  • The Mims Research Lab in Biology (conducts ongoing freshwater research)

  • The Carey Lab in Biology (conducts ongoing freshwater research)

  • Labs in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (various)

  • Research in CNRE (especially in FREC and FIW)

  • Dr. Schoenholtz, who can provide more information about opportunities with the Water Research Center

  • WRPM faculty mentors and professors you know from past classes are great resources for ideas and may have some research happening now

  • Dr. Gannon has some ongoing hydroinformatics research

The Virginia Water Resources Research Center Internship Program is a semester-long paid internship for undergraduate students.

Other research opportunities are posted in the Advising Center newsletter and the jobs/internships newsletter.

A related opportunity would be the on-campus internships with the VT Office of Sustainability.
